Do your kids love building, tinkering, or “helping” with your tools around the house? If so, I’ve got a fun (and free!) activity you’ll definitely want to know about.
Both Home Depot and Lowe’s host FREE Kids Workshops almost every month. While many families know about them, plenty still don’t—and they’re one of our favorite free activities.
So what are these workshops?
Kids build a small wooden project using real screws, nails, and simple tools with help from a parent or guardian. The projects change every month and have included everything from keepsake boxes and race cars to birdhouses, holiday crafts, and other fun creations. Best of all, kids get to take their finished project home.
Here’s when they happen:
Since the workshops are free, advance registration is required, and spots can fill up fast. The good news is that every store offers the same workshop, so if your closest location is full, it’s worth checking another nearby store.
In Weber County, we have two Home Depot locations and two Lowe’s locations, giving you multiple chances to grab a spot.
Both stores typically open registration about a month in advance. Simply create a free account on their website, search for “Kids Workshop,” and reserve your spot.
My biggest tip? Set a monthly reminder on your phone to register as soon as reservations open. It only takes a minute, and you’ll have a much better chance of getting in.
If you stay on top of registrations, your kids can attend two free building workshops every month—one at Home Depot and one at Lowe’s.
We’ve taken our own kids several times, and they’ve always had a blast. It’s a great way to spend a Saturday morning, build something together, and encourage creativity, confidence, and hands-on learning—all for free.
